How to play FreeCell and move card sequences
Every card is visible. Build cascades downward in alternating colours, use four free cells as temporary storage, and move each suit from Ace through King to its foundation.
A red Jack can move onto a black Queen, including the Jack and every valid card below it. The maximum group length is (empty free cells + 1) × 2 to the power of empty cascades, excluding an empty destination column.

Build downward in alternating colours. Any single card or valid sequence may fill an empty cascade.
Free cells
Each of the four free cells stores exactly one card and increases your sequence-moving capacity.
Foundations
Build each suit upward from Ace to King. A foundation top can return to a cascade or free cell.
Why a legal-looking move is rejected
- The full tail is selectedSelecting a Jack also selects every card below it; the entire tail must form a valid alternating sequence.
- There is not enough workspaceA long group needs enough empty free cells and cascades to be moved as legal intermediate steps.
- The destination is occupied incorrectlyA free cell holds one card, and a cascade target still requires opposite colour and one-rank descent.
Useful strategy
- Protect an empty cascadeAn empty cascade multiplies move capacity, so avoid filling it without opening a stronger continuation.
- Release Aces and low cardsLook beneath long sequences for cards that can start foundations and free permanent space.
- Do not fill every free cellKeep at least one temporary slot open whenever possible so the next useful sequence remains movable.
FreeCell questions players ask
Why can I not move a red Jack onto a black Queen?
The move is legal only if the Jack is exposed and every selected card below it forms a descending alternating-colour sequence that fits your current move capacity.
How many cards can move together?
The limit is (empty free cells + 1) × 2^empty cascades. An empty destination cascade is not counted as extra workspace.
Can a card leave a free cell?
Yes. A free-cell card can move to a valid cascade or its next foundation position.
Can foundation cards come back down?
Yes. The top card may return to a valid cascade or an empty free cell when needed.
