FreeCell Strategy: Common Mistakes and Winning Priorities
Strong FreeCell play is about preserving options. Before each move, ask what it uncovers, which workspace it consumes, and how the card can leave later.
Do not fill every free cell
Four occupied cells reduce every move to a single exposed card unless you have an empty cascade.
- Reserve one emergency cell
- Move temporary cards toward a clear exit
- Free cells are workspace, not storage
Protect empty cascades
An empty cascade multiplies sequence capacity and can reorganize a blocked board. Do not fill it with a card that has no follow-up.
- Prefer moves that create another empty column
- Expose Aces and twos
- Avoid parking a King without purpose
Plan foundation moves by both colors
Sending every low card home can remove a useful landing place. Keep red and black foundation progress reasonably balanced.
- Check the next lower opposite-color cards
- Auto-finish only when safe
- Undo early when access worsens
